Introduction
The Sámi people, whose traditional territory comprises the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, consist of rougly 9 different subgroups. Three of these (Skolt Sámi, Kildin Sámi and Ter Sámi) reside within the borders of the Russian Federation. Nearly all the Russian Sámi people, whom number around 1.500, live within the Murmansk Oblast, a province in the most northwestern part of Russia, bordering both Norway and Finland. All three Sámi peoples are threatened with extinction because of both linguistical and cultural assimilation.
